Hyperbole
Use of exaggeration terms for emphasis or effect.
Ex:” It’s really ironica… I have gray hair. I really do. The side of my head is full of millions of gray hairs.”
Understatement
A lesser expression is used than that which would be expected.
Ex: this is your captain speaking.. We have a slight problem… The boat has developed a leak.”
Auxesis
Reference to something with a name disproportionately greater that it’s nature.
Ex:”look at this wound”
Litotes
A figure of speech consisting of an understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by negating its opposite.
Ex: “ keep an eye on your mother whom we both know doesn’t have both oars in the water.”
“James? Oh, he’s not that bad looking”
Meiosis
Reference to something with a name disproportionately lesser than its nature
Ex:”shrink” for phychiatrist; “slasher” for a surgeon
