Overpopulation and the One Child Policy Flashcards
Define ‘birth rate’
The number of births per 1000 people, per year
Define ‘death rate’
The number of deaths per 1000 people, per year
Give a cause of an ageing population. Explain how they cause it.
Improved sanitation - Better life style and less germs
Give a cause of an ageing population. Explain how they cause it.
Improved food production and storage - less bacteria and fungi on the food when delivered
Give a way an ageing population can be managed. Explain how they help.
Raise the retirement age so that people stay in work for longer. They, therefore, support themselves and this reduces pressure on pensions.

Raise taxes for the economically active. This gives the government more money to help spend on services for the elderly e.g. healthcare, pensions etc.
What can population pyramids tell us about a country’s population? (i.e. if it has a wide base, this means… if it has a thin base, this means…)
Places with an ageing population and a very low birth rate would have a structure that looks like an upside-down pyramid.
The One-Child Policy was a way of managing overpopulation - explain a positive of this strategy
Motivating Incentives To Complying Couples
Couples who comply with the One-Child Policy, and only parent one baby, are given a certificate stating that they only have a single child. This certificate buys them some pretty good benefits. Some of these include completely interest-free loans, subsidies for education and housing, and much longer maternity leave.

Greatly Lowered The Poverty Rate
The problem of overcrowding wasn’t just a matter of space. Jobs became very sparse. Because of the huge growth in people, many were living in extreme poverty conditions. After the one-child policy took effect, the poverty rate slowly began to decline in the country.

Abortion and Infanticide Rates Climb
The biggest issue with the One Child policy in China is the alarming rate at which children are being abandoned. Since only one child can be had, the overwhelming majority want to have boys. This fact has surged the number of infant children, majority girls, who are abandoned or even killed after they are born.

Major Gender Imbalance
The majority of the population in China is male due to the fact that people can only have one child, and a boy is the only one that can provide money-making potential and carry the families name forward. A major imbalance in males and females has resulted in the country. This will cause problems in the near future because it will become increasingly harder for a man to find a wife to bear him children.
An impact of overpopulation?
There aren’t enough jobs for the number of people in the country, so unemployment increases.
An impact of overpopulation?
There’s increased poverty because more people are born into families that are already poor.
An impact of overpopulation?
Increased waste and pollution, e.g. more cars will release more greenhouse gases, and more waste will need to go to landfill sites.
Give a cause of a high birth rat - explain why they cause overpopulation.
Children can help to care for younger children and elderly family members.
As people make a family to help take care of the older residence.
