Overpopulation Flashcards
Where are overpopulated countries most likely to be and why?
Most likely to be in ledc’s in stage 2 or 3 of the DTM because they have a high birth rate and a falling death rate which leads to a high population growth rate
What causes a youthful population?
Low life expectancy and high birth rate
What is an implication of a youthful population?
There is a high dependency ratio which means there are lots of people under 15 who depend on the working population
Name 4 social problems that youthful, overpopulated ledc’s face
- healthcare and education services can’t cope with large young population so not everyone has access to them
- children have to work so miss out on education
- not enough houses so people live in makeshift housing which leads to spread of disease because the houses aren’t always connected to sewers and not always access to clean water
- food shortages
Name 2 economic problems of a youthful overpopulated population
- not enough jobs so unemployment increases
* increased poverty because people are born into already poor families
Name 2 environmental problems of a youthful overpopulated population
- increased waste and pollution, eg more cars will release more greenhouse gases and more waste will go to landfill sites
- more natural resources are used up, eg more trees cut down for firewood and more electricity
Name 2 sustainable population policies to control overpopulation
- birth control programmes
* immigration laws
Describe the birth control programmes used to control overpopulation
- aim to reduce the birth rate
- laws about how many children people can have
- governments help families plan and limit kids with free contraception and sex education
Explain how birth control programmes are sustainable
- population won’t get much bigger
* won’t be more people using up resources today so there will be some left for future generations
Describe the immigration laws to control overpopulation
- limit number of people immigrating
* be selective about who can enter a country, eg let in fewer child bearing age people
Explain how immigration laws are sustainable in controlling overpopulation
Slows down population growth rate so people use less resources so there’s some left for future generations
What usually causes overpopulation?
Rapid population growth
