Anterior
Refers to the front or forward-facing side of the body or body part
Posterior
Refers to the back or rear-facing side of the body or body part
Superior
Means above or higher in position
Inferior
Means below or lower in position
Medial
Refers to the direction toward the centre or midline of the body
Lateral
Describes movement away from the centre of the body
Proximal
Used to indicate a point closer to the body’s center or to the attachment of a limb
Distal
Used to indicate a point farther away from the body’s centre or attachment of a limb
Superficial
Means close to the body’s surface
Deep
Refers to a position farther away from the body’s surface
Dorsal
Describes the back or upper side of a body part
Ventral
Refers to the front or belly side of a body part
Flexion
Bending or decreasing the angle between two body parts
Extension
Straightening or increasing the angle between two body parts
Adduction
Moving a body part towards the midline of your body
Abduction
Moving a body part away from your body
