Burnout continuum

(Overtraining is the same longer term (overtraining syndrome = prolonged NFOR but still motivated))
Burnout characteristics
- Negative emotional state, no motivation to training/compete, dropout
only diagnoseable once disease, nutrition, allergies, injuries are rule out as causes
Signs & symptoms of OT
Decreases perf, sleep, appetite, mood
^ RPE, conflicts, irritability, URTI (Upper respiratory tract infection due to greater air exposure)
Psychological side (as training increases)
Healthy athlete - depression the same, Vigour & fatigue decrease
OTS athlete - depression ^, more pronounced changes
How to measure & issues w/ measurement
Questionnaires - Training distress scale & life demand analysis
Issues: time frame reference, what’s concerning, general or specific, lying
Single identity (entrapment) idea explained
- Sport becomes all encompassing, identity based on sport, self esteem sport dependant, friends made through sport, active burnout, conditional love dependence
