Over Fishing & Biofuels Flashcards
Define Over Fishing
Removal of organisms from the marine environment at a rate which cannot be sustained by an environment
What are the problems with over fishing? (4)
- Estimating populations
- Estimating catch
- Predicting population change
- Doesn’t consider ecology
What are the ecological impacts with over fishing? (4)
- Trophic interactions
- Change in community structure
- Loss of biodiversity
- By catch and habitat disturbance
What are the three key factors when considering a solution to overfishing ?
- Large Enough
- Protect source populations
- Effectively enforced
What are biofuels?
Any kinds of fuels which are biological in origin
What is purpose of biofuels?
The use of biofuels is a method for reducing greenhouse gas emissions as it will reduce the need for use of fossil fuels.
Why are biofuels carbon neutral?
Because the CO2 uptake through photosynthesis is equal to that given out during combustion
What are the two draw backs of biofuels?
a) reduction of biodiversity because land to grow the biofuel is being gained by deforesting tropical rain forest
b) or the land is being taken from agriculturally productive food-growing land in countries where malnutrition is already a problem
