Outside Cab Inspection Flashcards
Lights and Reflectors
Check that all light lenses and clearance lights are clean, not missing, or broken. Check the proper color for location and function. (Clear head, amber front, red in rear). Check all reflectors are not missing or broken. Check the proper color for location and function. (Amber front and red in rear). Check applicable reflective tape is clean and securely affixed to the vehicle.
Leaks
- Check for fluid leaks on the ground, such as puddles of oil, coolant, or fuel.
- Check for dripping fluids on the underside of the engine and transmission,
- Check engine hose clamps and hoses show no signs of leaks, cuts, cracks, wear, bulges, or abrasive damage from rubbing against other parts.
- Hose clamps are secure.
Alternator Belt
- The belt should not be cracked or show signs of excessive wear, frayed, or loose fibers.
- Check the tension of the belts. They should not deflect more than 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from the center of the belt.
- Belt should be snug.
Water Pump
- Check the pump is operating properly, not damaged, and is belt driven.
- Check the water pump is securely mounted.
- No loose or missing bolts.
- Check for leaks from the pump.
Water Pump Belt
- The belt should not be cracked or signs of excessive wear, fraying, or loose fibers.
- Check the tension of the belts. They should not deflect more than 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from the center of the belt.
- Belt should be snug.
Coolant
- Make sure it is within safe operating range by using the site glass or removing the cap.
Air Compressor
- Identify the air compressor is gear driven.
- Air compressor is securely mounted with no loose or missing bolts.
- No fluid or air leaks, operates properly and is not damaged.
Power Steering Pump
- Identify the steering pump is gear driven,
- Steering pump is securely mounted with no loose or missing bolts.
- No fluid or air leaks, operates properly, and not damaged.
Check Oil and Power Steering Fluid
- Check by using the dipstick.
- Make sure it is above the refill mark.
- Within the safe operating range.
Steering Box and Hoses
- Check that the steering gear box is securely mounted to the frame with no missing bolts.
- It is not cracked or leaking.
- Power steering hoses are not leaking or damaged.
Steering Linkage
- Check that connecting links, arms, and rods from the steering box to the wheel are not excessively worn, cracked or loose.
- Check the joints and sockets are not excessively worn, cracked, or loose.
- There are no missing nuts, bolts, or cotter keys.
Shock Absorber
- Check the shock absorber is securely mounted.
- Not leaking.
Spring Mounts
- Check for cracked or broken spring hangers.
- Check for missing or damaged bushings.
- Leaf springs are attached, securely mounted, no loose bolts or brackets.
Brake Hoses and Lines
- Check hose couplings are securely connected and not leaking.
- Hoses are not cracked, worn, frayed, or leaking.
- Hoses can supply air to the brakes.
Brake Chambers
- Check the brake chambers have no cracks, dents, and are not leaking.
- They are securely mounted, with no loose or missing clamps.
Slack Adjustors
- Check the slack adjustors are securely mounted with no loose or missing bolts.
- Check the slack adjustors and pushrods are not bent, broken, loose, or missing parts.
- Explain that the brake pushrod should not move more than 1” when pulled by hand with the brakes released.
Brake Linings
- They are not worn dangerously thin.
- They show no signs of oil or grease on the linings.
Brake Drums
- Check brake drums for cracks, dents, or holes.
- They show no signs of oil or grease on the brake drums.
- Check for loose or missing bolts.
Front Tires
- Check the tread depth is at least 4/32 of an inch in all major grooves on the steering-axle tires.
- The tread is evenly worn.
- No cuts or damage to the sidewalls.
- Check for proper inflation by using a tire gauge.
- Check that valve stems and caps are not missing, broken, or damaged.
Rims
- Check for damage or bent rims.
- Welding repairs.
Lug Nuts
- Check all lug nuts are present.
- Lug nuts show no signs of being loose, such as rust trails.
- There are no cracks radiating from the lug bolt holes or distortions of the bolt holes.
Hub Oil Seals and Axle Seals
- Check hub oil seals and axle seals are not leaking.
- Check the oil is at the proper level by using the sight glass.
Mirrors
- Mirror brackets are securely mounted.
- They are not damaged.
Doors
- Check the door is not damaged.
- It opens and closes securely from the outside.
- Check door hinges are secure with door seals intact.
- Check windows are not damaged or excessively dirty.
Air & Electrical Lines (Tractor)
- Check the condition of the air hoses and electrical line insulation. Check the air hose fittings from the rear of the tractor show no signs of damage.
- They are not cut, cracked, chaffed, spliced, or leaking.
- They are not excessively worn, no steel braid showing through.
- Air and electrical lines are not pinched or dragging against tractor parts.
- The electrical plug is firmly seated and locked in place on the tractor.
- Check for air leaks.
Air & Electrical Lines (Trailer)
- Check trailer air and electric connectors are sealed and not damaged.
- Glad hands are locked in place with no air leaks.
- The electrical plug is firmly seated and locked in place on the trailer.
Bulkhead
- Check for signs of damage such as cracks, bulges, holes, or missing rivets.
- The bulkhead is strong.
Deck Plate & Steps
- Check the deck plate and steps are clear of loose objects.
- They are solid, securely mounted to the tractor frame.
- There are no loose or missing bolts.
Tractor Frame
- Check for cracks, bends, holes, or broken welds in the tractor frame.
- Check for damage such as cracks, bends, holes, breaks, loose or missing cross members.
Drive Shaft
- Check the drive shaft is not bent, twisted, or cracked.
- The U-joints are secure.
- U-joints are free of foreign objects.
Apron
- Check the apron is not bent, cracked, or broken.
