Q
Discuss 10 stages of shipbuilding
A
- Design and Estimating:
* Shipyard staff produce design, cost estimates, building strategy and production plans - Materials reception:
* Cost estimate prepared and materials must be ordered
* Materials delivered to material reception facility where stored until needed - Steel stockyard
* One of the first items ordered and then stored in steel stockyard - Surface preparation
* Steel plates and sections retrieved from steel stockyard and processed to ensure they meet standards for construction - Plate and stiffener preparation
* Steel plates cut to precise sizes, bent to shape and numbered according to drawing plans - Assembly into blocks
* Build steel components into sub assemblies and blocks from which the ship is constructed in the dry dock - Coating
* Once blocks assembled all surfaced are coated in an anti-corrosive coating - Pre-outfitting
* Fit as many of the thousands of outfit items into the blocks and sub-assemblies - Assembly in the dock
* Prefabricated sections of the ship are lifted into the assembly dock, lowered into place, aligned and welded into position - Outfit at outfit quay
* Once hull complete, dock is flooded and vessel floated to outfit quay where outfitting is completed and trials are carried out
