When was Otzi discovered and where?
He was discovered after a glacier melted, in the Otzal Alps in 1991, September border of Austria and Italy.
How was Otzi discovered?
He found by two hikers, Erika and Helmut, who were walking and discovered his body.
What did Erika and Helmut do when they discovered Otzi?
They notified the police because they thought the body recently died.
How did Erika and Helmut excavate Otzi’s body?
They used ski poles.
What was Otzi wearing?
He was wearing shoes made from grass, bearskin and cord. Leggings made from leather. A coat made from leather and grass.
What did Otzi have with him?
Otzi had a backpack, a leather pouch, first aid kit with Tree fungus used as medicine Maple leaves for starting fires, knife, bow and arrow, but some were unfinished. Quiver Axe made from copper and yew wood handle.
How was Otzi preserved?
He was preserved frozen in the glacier and protected in between two rocks.
How did Otzi die?
Since 2007, there has been evidence that Otzi was shot with an Arrowhead in his shoulder. This hit an artery and is believed he bled to death, but he had also suffered concussion from hitting his head.
When did Otzi die?
He died in 3300 BC
Why were his leg muscles and hip muscles were worn down?
His leg muscles and hip muscles were worn down from walking.
What was found in Otzi’s intestines?
Pollen from different altitudes was found suggesting he was recently on the move and grain, meat, mountain goat and corn was also found in his intestine, suggesting he had recently eaten.
How was this found?
This was found out because they did an autopsy of his intestines and stomach. CT scans of his body. X rays. Biological anthropology. Radiocarbon dating pathology tests. Archaeologists studied his belongings.
What was the colour of Otzi’s hair/eyes?
Brown
What were some health problems Otzi had?
He was lactose intolerant, his heart arteries were hardened, and he had heart disease, Lyme disease and he had arthritis in his left knee.
