otyher part Flashcards
what is fracking short form for?
hydraulic fracturing
What is fracking?
it is the process of drilling down to the earth and a high pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the air. Water, sand and chemicals are injected into the rock at a high pressure that allows the gas to flow out tot he head of the well.
What is shale?
a sedimentary rock
What is fissures?
cracks
Where does Fracking take place?
Canada
- AB, BC, NS, NB
United States of America
United Kingdom
Who is involved with fracking?
government- they handle situations/problems
oil companies- they are the ones digging up the oil
first nations- they are environmentalists and warn the public
general population- we ask for the energy
non-governmental organizations- they care for the environment and fight for it such as earth rangers
Why is fracking a problem?
- water contamination
- pollution (noise, air, water)
- lose of aboriginal reserves
- chemical injection
- weak regulations
Financial benefits of fracking
- job creation in America
- money to be made
- natural gas prices dropped from 47%
- ghg emission dropped by 12% compared to coal
Does fracking cause earthquakes? How?
yes, disposing of waste water in deep rock formation causes earthquakes
