Otosclerosis Flashcards
1
Q
what is the pathophysiology of otosclerosis?
A
- abnormal bone growth at the stapes
- fixation of stapes to oval window
- conductive hearing loss due to inability to vibrate
2
Q
What is the clinical presentation of otosclerosis?
A
- slow progressive conductive hearing loss ( 2nd ear is effected most of the time)
- Tinnitus (no other otological symtoms’
- symptoms may increase during pregnancy or due to hormonal changes
3
Q
what is the etiology?
A
- Hereditary link - autosomal dominant
4
Q
what kind of hearing loss does it cause?
A
conductive hearing loss
5
Q
What does audiometry show?
A
- reduced air conduction in low frequencies
2. Carhart’s notch - increase in bone conduction threshold at 2000 hz
6
Q
Treatment options
A
- trial of hearing to improve tinnitus
2. Stapedectomy (second line)
