Other Useful Substances From Crude Oil Flashcards
What is a catalyst?
A substance that increases the rate of reaction without being changed itself
What is cracking?
The process used to break down long-chain hydrocarbons into more useful short chain hydrocarbons, using high temperatures and a catalyst.
Cracking involves -
Heating the hydrocarbons in till they vaporise and then passing the vapour over a hot catalyst
What are alkenes?
Unsaturated hydrocarbons
What do alkenes react with?
Bromine water?
What colour does bromine do when reacted with alkenes?
Colourless (from orange)
What is a formula for alkenes?
CnH2n
What is the formula for ethene?
C2H4
How is ethanol made?
Reacting ethene with steam in the presence of catalyst, phosphoric acid
How else can alcohol be made other from ethene?
Fermentation of sugar
How is ethanol made from fermentation?
Sugar is converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide
What are polymers?
Long chain molecules
What are monomers?
Small alkene molecules
What is polymerisation?
When small alkene molecules join together to from polymers
Are polymers biodegradable?
No
