Other Types of Protection Flashcards
What is type ‘m’ protection?
Encapsulation by encapsulating or encasing the hot or sparking components with a material that does not support combustion, which prevents the ingress of any explosive gas and also cools the parts such that the surface temperature is safe for the intended use.
What is type ‘o’ protection?
Protection by immersing the equipment in oil to a sufficient depth, such that any ignition capable products do not reach the surface where they could ignite any potentially explosive atmosphere. However, precautions are required to ensure an adequate oil level is maintained.
What is type ‘q’ protection?
Protection is provided by covering the parts that my cause ignition to a critical depth in a fine powder such as quartz. This quenches any arc before the combustion products can ignite a surrounding gas. An additional form of external protection is required to limit the maximum current that may be safely used.
