It was created in 1967 under Prime Minister Trudeau.
It applies towards immigrants who are skilled workers and professionals.
If an individual is not a refugee or family class applicant, they will have to qualify under the point system.

A

Each economic class immigrant who is planning to come to Canada must prove they are in good health.

Reasons why people would not be allowed entry:

  • their current health puts other canadians at risk; i.e. they have tuberculosis.
  • they have a certain condition that could endanger the public- i.e. a serious mental disorder.
  • their health concerns would put a burden on Canada’s health industry; i.e. HIV/AIDS

eg. The point system looks at people’s skills & education, not race.
In the past, british immigrants were favored by Canada over others.

What is the Singh decision?

A

Satnam Singh came to Canada from India seeking refugee status but was rejected under the Immigration Act, Mr. Singh was not allowed to state his case in person or to appeal the government’s decision on his case. The Supreme Court said this violated section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which says: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person, and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.
