- Sibilance suggests a whispering calmness that enveloped the city at Christmas, temporarily replacing sounds of IR
- ‘White’ - connotations of purity, represents the poor having hope and optimism at Christmas despite being in a place of hardship
- ‘Sheets’ - connotations of warmth, care, family values, almost like the city is being ‘tucked into bed’ and for one night the world is a comfortable place
- Also could just be a facade as it is only a superficial cover of the problems of society
- Dickens criticises urbanisation
- Also metaphor for upper and lower classes, the snow on roofs is untouched, the dirty snow represents lower class who are used and taken advantage of
