When should urine samples be delivered to the lab?
Within 1 hour of collection, or refrigerate them
Urine-random specimen
screens for metabolic abnormalities
Urine- first morning specimen
8 hour specimen, collected right when patient wakes up

samples collected over 24 hours combined, discard first morning sample
Urine-midstream clean catch
collected after patient passed first few mL, flushes miscroornagisms out of urethra

random sample via midstream clean catch, container has temp sensitive strip
Fecal-random specimen
used for bacterial cultures, O&P, and fats and fibers
Fecal-72 hour stool specimen
used for quantitative fecal fat determination
Semen specimen
- for if viable sperm are present
- for fertility testing
- for success of vasectomy
Semen collection
- avoid ejaculation 3 days before collection
- time of collection should be documented
- report if partial or complete for volume
- sample should be kept close to body temp and delivered within 30 minutes
Throat specimen
collected with throat swabs
Nasopharyngeal specimens
used to diagnose upper respiratory tract infections with cotton tipped wire
