Other Reactions & Uses Of Chlorine & Its Compounds Flashcards
Chlorine reaction with water used for what
Purification
Chlorine is slightly soluble in water, and actually reacts slightly with water in a what reaction
disproportionation reaction
Oxidation and redox reaction taken place
Cl2 (g) + H2O (l) ➡️ HCl (aq) + HClO (aq) “chlorine water”
What happens to the chlorine
The chlorine is simultaneously oxidised and reduced.
Cl2 ➡️ HCl + HClO

What is HClO and it’s role
chloric (1) acid.
It is a mild oxidising agent and effective at killing bacteria without being harmful to humans.
A small amount of chlorine dissolved in water will sterilise the water and chlorine is widely used in swimming pools and in water treatment for this reason.
Drawbacks of using chlorine for purification
- Chlorine is toxic to humans in anything other than very small doses, so care must be taken not to over chlorinate the water supply.
- Chlorine may also form chlorinated organic molecules which are carcinogenic
Chlorine reaction with cold dilute alkali used for what
Bleach
Chlorine in cold dilute alkali reacts in what reaction
Chlorine disproportionates readily in dilute alkali in another disproportionation reaction
Cl2 (g) + 2OH- (aq) ➡️ Cl- (aq) + ClO- (aq) + H2O (l)
chlorine is simultaneously oxidised and reduced
Cl2 + 2OH- ➡️ Cl- + ClO- + H2O

What is the ion ClO- and it’s role
Chlorate (I) ion
It is an important oxidising agent and is the active ingredient in domestic bleach, NaClO
