Displacement Reactions Between Halogens And Halide Ions Flashcards
The more reactive halogens (ie the strongest oxidising agents) will displace what
the more reactive halides (ie the strongest reducing agents) from solutions of their ions
Cl2(g) + 2Br- (aq) -> 2Cl- (aq) + Br2(aq)
Observations
Chlorine displace bromine from solution
Organic ➡️ clear, colourless to orange
Aqueous ➡️ clear, colourless to orange
Cl2 (aq) + 2l- (aq) -> 2Cl- (aq) + l2 (aq)
Observations
Chlorine displace iodide ions from solution
Organic ➡️ clear, colourless to purple
Aqueous ➡️ clear, colourless to brown
Br2 (aq) + 2l- (aq) -> 2Br- (aq) + l2 (aq)
Observations
Bromine will displace iodide ions from solution but not chloride ions
Organic ➡️ clear, colourless to purple
Aqueous ➡️ clear, colourless to brown
What can iodide displace
Cannot displace bromine or chloride ions from solution
