Question 1

Measure the suspended Solids in a Water Sample

Suspended Solids

Cause turbidity in water
Dry and then weigh a Filter Paper
Pour 500 cm3 of water through it.
Dry it in an oven (over a radiator)
Reweight it
The difference in weight is the suspended solid content
Multiply the answer by two to get the suspended solids in grams per litre

Measure the Dissolved Solids in a Water Sample

Dissolved Solids

Weigh a clean dry beaker
Pour 500 cm3 of filtered water into it. (filtering removes suspended solids)
Evaporate the water till almost dry then finish drying over a radiator
Note the white powder at the bottom
Reweight it
The difference in weight is the dissolved solid content
Multiply the answer by two to get the dissolved solids content in grams per litre
