Other Peripherals
A peripheral is an external device connected to your computer for input, output,
or storage.
There are many devices you can attach to your computer, including scanners, speakers, subwoofers, label printers, trackballs, digital cameras, iPods, MP3 players, SmartMedia readers, PDAs, bar-code readers and more. Below are the most typical peripherals.
Drawing Tablet
An input de- vice which allows you to enter your drawings or sketches into the computer using a pen-like stylus instead of a mouse.
External Drive
Any hard drive, zip drive, CD drive, or other is considered a peripheral if it sits outside of your computer case and has its own case and power supply.
Keyboard
An input device with keys assigned to specific characters, used to enter text.
Mouse
An input device which allows you to control the posi- tion of a cursor or pointer on your monitor.
Scanner
An input device used to digitize artwork. There are flatbed scanners, sheetfed scanners, drum scanners and slide or film scanners.
Trackball
An input device, similar in concept to an up- side-down mouse. The unit
remains stationary on the desk, and thus requires less desk space than a mouse. The computer operator rotates the ball slightly to move the cursor on screen.
