Memory Flashcards
Memory
Think of RAM as being similar to short term memory. Com- puters seldom come with enough RAM for more than ba- sic operations. You can add memory modules (referred to as SIMMs, DIMMs or SDRAM) but the maximum amount your computer can hold varies by model. You can pay someone to add the extra memory you buy or install it yourself. It’s not that hard if you are reasonably careful and pay attention to details, but a mistake can ruin the new chip.
There are different types and speeds of RAM which must be matched to the model of computer you have. Charts are available to help make the right decision. You should be aware that RAM prices vary greatly, and fluctuate with the status of foreign economies and market demand.
In brief, more RAM is bet- ter. Photoshop is RAM hungry.
Flash RAM
A type of memory chip which is able to store data without computer power be- cause it contains its own pow- er storage capacitors. Flash memory chips are used in USB Flash drives, Solid State Disks, and memory cards. Expect your Flash drive and SSD (Solid State Drive) to wear out.
RAM
Random Access Memory chip. This is where the com- puter manipulates your docu- ment and performs any pro-cesses such as running filters or copying and pasting. RAM is measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). Think of it as short term memory.
Variations of RAM include EDO and SDRAM as well as others. It’s important to buy the type of RAM your computer needs.
