Other Myopathies - Exercise Testing And Prescription Flashcards

Q

What types of exercises might you consider early in the treatment for a patient with Guillain-Barre Syndrome?

A

These patients fatigue quickly, training should be low-intensity exercises but similar to other neuromuscular diseases.

Ataxia and coordination might be problematic, so repetitive task practice and reaching movement practice can be used.

Daily stretch and ROM exercises will be useful

Q

Resistance training in patients with inflammatory myopathies has generally been discouraged because such training is sufficient to increase the inflammatory response in muscles and could lead to worsening of symptoms.

Would you perform RT in patients with inflammatory myopathies? Why/why not?

A

Yes, although it was considered problematic, several reports have shown that all forms of training, including RT, have beneficial effects on strength and movement capacity without increasing the inflammatory response.

It is suggested that training begins conservatively and progress more slowly in these patients.
