OTHER LENS ANOMALIES Flashcards
1
Q
what is PCO?
A
- left over cells from the natural lens begin to grow on the posterior capsule
2
Q
PCO symptoms?
A
- gradual blru vision
- difficulty with night driving, glare, halos, low light situations
- if capsular stria – maddox rod effect, which describes posterior capsule fold causing a bothersome streak of light in vision.
3
Q
what is capsular striae?
A
tension on the capsule from the haptics – the orientation of the striae are parallel to the orientation of the haptics.
4
Q
capsular striae cause a maddox rod phenomenon symptom. what is a maddox rod phenomenon?
A
- describes posterior capsule fold causing a bothersome streak of light in vision.
5
Q
signs of PCO?
A
- opacification of the posterior lens capsule which may manifest as any combination of striae, haze or elschnig pearls
6
Q
tx for PCO?
A
- YAG capsulotomy – removes proliferated lens cells (do not grow back).
7
Q
define ectopia lentis
A
it is displacment (luxation or subluxation) of the natural lens
8
Q
what are symptoms of ectopia lentis?
A
- possible asymtomatic
- diplopia
- blur
- angle closure symptoms
9
Q
signs of ectopia lentis?
A
presentation is based on the cause of ectopia lentis:
* blunt trauma
* marfan’s syndrome – bilateral, lens located up & out.
10
Q
tx for ectopia lentis?
A
- surgery to remove the dislocated lens + new refractive error corrected.
- underlying dx should be treated.
