ACQUIRED AGE RELATED CATARACTS Flashcards
what causes acquired age related cataracts?
- age
- UV exposure
symptoms of age related cataracts?
- gradual blurry vision
- difficulty with night driving, seeing in low light situations, glare, halos around lights
what are 5 types of age related cataracts?
- NSC
- mature cataracts
- morgagnian cataracts
- hypermature cataracts
- cortical cataracts
what is NSC and what location in the lens does it appear at?
- sclerosis, yellowing and opacification of the nucleus of the lens
specific s/s of NSC?
- myopic shift
- central opacity – impacts distance vision more than near vision
what are mature cataracts and what location do they occur?
complete opacification of the cortex – makes the lens appear white
what are motgagnian cataract and what location do they occur?morgagnian cataract
- liquefied, white cortex and an inferiorly displaced nucleus
what are hypermature cataracts and what location do they occur?
advanced morgagnian cataract
hypermature cataracts can lead to what?
- phacolytic glaucoma — caused when protein leaks out of the lens.
- phacomorphic glaucoma — caused when the thickened cataract lens pushes the iris forward leading to angle closure glaucoma.
what are cortical cataracts and what location do they occur?
- grey/white spoke like pattern that occurs in the cortex (can be anterior or posterior)
s/s of cortical cataracts?
- spoke like pattern usually in the periphery
- most symptomatic at night b/c pupil is dilated
what and where do subcapsular cataracts occur?
- plaque-like opacities that can occur in the anterior and posterior poles of the lens (subcapsular region).
subcapsular can both be ____ and _____ ___ related.
age, non-age related
what other causes are subcapsular cataracts related to?
- atopic dermatitis
- inflammation
- corticosteroid use
- trauma
- DM
- radiation
- alcoholism
subcapsular opacities are usually located centrally. knowning this will there near acuity or distance acuity be impacted more?
near VA b/c pupil will be more miotic
