Water table
Upper layer of the phreatic zone, below which the ground is saturated with waters.
Its level is variable depending on precipitation levels

Hortonian overland flow
Movement along surface when rainfall arrives too quickly and exceeds the infiltration capacity of the soil
Saturated overland flow
When water is forced to flow over the land surface as all the pores spaces in the underlying soil are filled with water.
Infiltration capacity
The maximum rate at which rain can be absorbed by a soil in a given condition
Recharge
The refilling of water in pores where the water has dried up or been extracted.

Natural flow of water from the earth’s surface

The part of a river’s discharge that is provided by groundwater seeping into the bed of a river
