what is the IUD?
a small plastic and copper device thats placed into the womb
typica/ perfect use = 99%
what is the mode of action of the IUD?
create a completely toxic environment to foreign bodies, including sperm; that environment prompts sperm phagocytosis, in which the sperm is killed
what are the advantages of an IUD?
Its action lasts for ten years if it is not removed in between
The onset of action is immediate
It is independent of sexual activity
It doesn’t interfere with intercourse
It is suitable for lactating women
Fertility returns promptly on discontinuation
It can be used by women who are on any type of medication
It is not associated with cancer of any organ unlike hormonal contraception
It does not cause weight gain
It does not usually affect mood or sex drive
what are the disadvantages of an IUD?
- menorrhagia/ dysmenorrhoea/ polymenorrhoea
- no STI protection
- increases risk of PID
what are the sterilisation options for men and women?
The fallopian tubes in women or the tubes
carrying sperm in men (vas deferens) are
cut, sealed or blocked
what is the effectiveness of sterilisation?
Overall failure rate is about 1 in 200 for
females and 1 in 2,000 for males.
what are the advantages and disadvantages of sterilisation?
Advantages
Sterilisation is permanent with no long or
short-term serious side effects.
Cautions/disadvantages
Shouldn’t be chosen if in any doubt about
having children in the future
what are fertility awareness methods?
Fertile and infertile times
of the menstrual cycle
are identified by noting
different fertility indicators.
e.g length of menstural cycle (calendar method), body tempretures and cervical mucus.
effectiveness is up to 99% in perfect use, but typical use around 76%.
what are the advantages of using fertility awareness methods?
No physical side effects,
and can be used to
plan as well as prevent
pregnancy.
what are the disadvantages of fertility awareness methods?
Need to avoid sex or use
a condom at fertile times
of the cycle.
what are the UK MEC criteria?
The UK Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (UKMEC) offers guidance to providers of contraception regarding who can use contraceptive methods safely
takes into consideration factors such as age, length post partum, smoking, BMI , CVD and hypertension.
