What is the optimal range for deploying OC spray, and why?
Between 90cm and 3.5 metres.
Less than 90cm risks secondary contamination (splashback). More than 3.5 metres and the spray loses effectiveness.
How should you move when deploying OC spray?
Spray => Move (laterally) => Assess
What are the seven steps to decontaminate a person contaminated by OC spray?
- Control (physical restraint and verbal comms)
- Instructions (e.g. remain calm, don’t rub eyes)
- Removal (from spray area into fresh air)
- Reassurance (e.g. that you can help and it will get better soon)
- Decontamination (with cool water)
- Medical (seek assistance from ambulance/hospital staff, if needed)
- Observe (the person until effects have worn off)
