Paraldehyde (Paral):
Sedation for pt. with delirium tremens or psychiatric conditions characterized by extreme excitement
Meprobamate (Miltown):
manages acute anxiety for up to 4 months
Monitor addictive pt.’s, Gradual withdrawal
Chloral hydrate (Aquachloral):
produces nocturnal sedation or preoperative sedation
Glutethimide (generic), zaleplon (Sonata), and zolpidem (Ambien):
short-term treatment of insomnia.
Caution: Elder and L/K failure
Antihistamines (promethazine [Phenergan], diphenhydramine [Benadryl]:
preoperative medications, and postoperatively to decrease the need for narcotics. Allergy, Motion sickness. AE’s Drying, dry mouth, thick secretions, monitor respirations. Monitor injection sites.
Buspirone (BuSpar):
reduces anxiety without severe CNS and adverse effects. Offlabel use for Premenstrual Syndrome
AE’s: HA, Dry mouth.
Caution: Elder and L/K failure
