You have been asked to plan a “community safety presentation” for Bushfire Action Week. What are considerations you should address during the planning?
- Target audience
- Plan on how you are going to present the information
- Consider the age, interests and culture of your audience
- Utilise appropriate resources
You have been informed by a local government event coordinator that the presentation you are to deliver will have members of the public with special needs. With this in mind, what type of audience would you expect?
Communicate with the group leader and find out the appropriate information needed in designing the presentation in regards to what this particular group’s “special needs” are.
An audience that may not be able to comprehend or understand the message we are trying to deliver. The presentation may not be two way as the audience may not be able to communicate.

By the purpose for which it is designed, constructed or adapted to be used.
What is the function of the Buildings Inspections Guidelines Manual (The ‘BIG M’ Document)?
To provide a guidance tool for DFES personnel when inspecting buildings.
Which piece of legislation gives Firefighters the authority to conduct building inspections?
Fire Brigades Act 1942
You notice a firefighter from a different platoon has modified a piece of equipment on the pump. Whilst this may or may not be a good idea, what is wrong with the firefighters actions and why?
May place firefighters at risk as we are not authorised to repair or make modifications to equipment.
What is Risk Mitigation and why is it so important to conduct strategies within the community to reduce risk?
Risk Mitigation is when the actions you take can reduce or lessen the risk or hazard. It also reduces the impact to a community that is open to hazards and changes the surroundings in which hazards occur within the community.
What is the purpose of the ‘Chain of Command’?
Provides control and communications to complete a task. It also provides a visible authority rank as to who answers to who to ensure correct command is maintained.
Why is it important for every employee to be aware of their Award and/or Certified Agreement?
It outlines minimum employment terms and conditions and allows us to be aware of the requirements of our job.
Identify what DFES Policy #10 relates to, and describe the purpose of this policy?
Grievance policy. A procedure is in place to ensure a grievance is addressed in a fair and equitable manner. It focuses on the local level and ensures positive working relationships.
Explain the importance of using Occurrence Books and list five (5) of the entries that might need to be made by the duty firefighter?
It is a legal document that records operational and administrative events as they occur. Such as;
- Date/time
- Platoon on/off duty
- Staff available or absent
- Staff movements
- Incident information
- Any visitors/guests on station
- Keybag use and returns
List two (2) general rules for communicating with managers and supervisors?
- All communication is clear and concise.
- Be assertive (not aggressive).
When conducting an inspection on industrial premises, list two additional items of PPC that may be required to be worn to comply with that workplaces health and safety procedures in addition to the level of dress required to in SOP 3.2.1- Order Dress – PPC Matrix?
- Safety glasses
- Ear protection
What actions should be taken if you experience an issue in the workplace that you cannot resolve yourself?
Refer to the SO. If the SO cannot assist;
1 Approach the next person in chain of command
2. Follow the grievance policy
3. Seek independent advice
