Describe Venice in setting in AO3
- England in the 16th & 17th century perceived Venice as having a reputation of diversity, wealth and political stability
- At the time Shakespeare was writing, Venice was a great trading power which was seen as wealthy.
- Venice was widely known in Europe for its sexual tolerance and Venetian women were often seen as promiscuous.
Describe Cyprus in setting in AO3
-Cyprus is a place of conflict where threat of the Turks invasion made it war-like, in tune with real threats Cyprus faced in the 16th century
the play is set in 1570, a few months before the Turks did invade (ironic)
