Q

what was the War party?

these noisy patriots condemned Jeremiah as a morose pessimist (27,28)

A

they dreamed of freedom and peace while exile and war were already approaching the gates of the city. Jeremiah’s call to submit to Babylon as the lesser evil was interpreted by the war party as a lack of patriotism at best or treason at worst.

Q

what are the parallels between the life of Jeremiah and the Messiah?

A

the various parallels between the life of Jeremiah and of the Messiah are known:

  1. both had an 11th hour ministry proclaiming the overthrow of Jerusalem and its temple by the Babylonians (or Romans)
  2. Jeremiah and Jesus were both men beloved of God, and obliged to live a life of suffering in spite of their guiltlessness and holiness from birth.
  3. Both wept over the city which stoned the prophets and did not recognise what would bring it peace.
  4. The love of both was repaid with hatred.
