Types of Clinical Reasoning
Procedural Interactive Narrative Pragmatic Conditional
Procedural Reasoning
The “doing” of the practice
Involves identifying problems related OTs domain of concern, goal setting, and tx planning
Implements strategies by gathering and interpreting client data
Interactive Reasoning
Deals with how the disability/disease affects the person
Narrative Reasoning
Deals with the individuals occupational story and focuses on the process of change needed to reach an imagined future
Identifies roles and activities that were/are important to client before/after illness
Pragmatic Reasoning
The context in which the OT practitioners thinking occurs
Considers the tx environment and OT practitioner’s values, knowledge, abilities, and experiences
Conditional Reasoning
Involves an ongoing revision of tx
Represents an integration of interactive, procedural, and pragmatic reasoning
Group Origin Phase
leader composes protocols and planning
Group Orientation Phase
involves members learning what the group is about, making a commitment to the group, and developing initial connections with other members
Group Intermediate Phase
members develop interpersonal bonds, group norms, and specialized member roles thru involvement in goal-directed activities and clarification of group’s purpose
Group Conflict Phase
Challenges the group’s structure, purpose, or process with dissension and disagreement among the group.
Unsuccessful resolution results in dissolution of group.
Successful resolution results in modifications enabling the group to move to the next phase
Group Cohesion Phase
involves members regrouping after conflict leading to group stability
Group Maturation Phase
members use their skills and energies to be productive and to achieve group’s goals
Group Termination Phase
Involves dissolution of the group due to lack of engagement of the members, inability to resolve conflict, administrative complaints, goal attainment, or task accomplishment.
Directive Group Leadership
OT is responsible for the planning and structure of group
Members have limited cognitive, verbal, and social skills (parallel/project)
Leader’s goal is task accomplishment
