Beneficence
Demonstrate concern for the well-being and safety of the recipients of services
Examples
Maintain current knowledge by attending evidence-based educational sessions
Re-eval of services provided in a timely manner
Provide services in scope of practice and level of competence
Terminate tx when no longer beneficial
Nonmaleficence
Intentionally refrain from actions that cause harm
Examples
Take reasonable precautions to avoid imposing harm upon pt
Use procedures considered part of standards of practice
Goals justify risks
Maintain a professional relationship
Avoid being “under the influence”
Autonomy/Confidentiality
Respect the right of the individual to self-determination
Examples Establish a collaborative relationship Obtain consent Respect client’s right to refuse Ensure confidentiality
Justice
Provide services in a fair and equitable manner
Respect and maintain awareness of laws and policies regarding practice
Examples
Interact in a respectful and impartial manner
Address barriers to access of services (health fair)
Refrain from actions such as sharing of educational info (test questions)
Document for reimbursement done in accordance with law
Veracity
Provide comprehensive, accurate, and objective info when representing the profession
Examples
Refrain from fraudulent, deceptive statements
Report accurately and in a timely manner all info related to OT services
Ensure “marketing” of OT services is truthful
Accurately reflect work done by others (citations)
Fidelity
Treat colleagues and other professionals with respect, fairness, discretion, and integrity.
Examples
Report violations of the standards of practice and/or code of ethics
Respect private info about colleagues
Avoid conflict of interest between job and other roles
Use conflict resolution to resolve issues between staff
Abuse
deliberately hurting a patient physically, mentally, or emotionally
Neglect
deliberately withholding services that are necessary to maintain an individual’s physical, mental, and emotional health
Entry-Level OTA Supervision
Less than 1 yr
Close supervision by all lvls of OTs or an inter/adv OTA
Can supervise aides, techs, and volunteers
Intermediate-Level OTA Supervision
1-3 yrs
Routine (/2wks) or general (monthly) supervision by all lvls of OTs or adv OTA
Can supervise aides, techs, entry OTAs, volunteers, Lvl 1 OT students, Lvl 1/2 OTA students
Advanced-Level OTA Supervision
3+ yrs
General supervision by all lvls of OTs or adv OTA
Can supervise aides, techs, entry/inter OTAs, volunteers, Lvl 1 OT students, Lvl 1/2 OTA students
Medicare
100% Federally funded Program . Must be:
Age 65 +
Under 65 have ALS dx, dialysis/kidney transplant, or are disabled for 24 continuous months and received social security benefits
Medicaid
Federal and State Partnership. Covers:
Income is 20% below the federal poverty level
Children, Seniors, Adults with Dep Children, Pregnant Women, Severe Disabilities
Medicare A-D
A- inpatient
B- outpatient, home health, DME. Considered Supplemental (pay premium)
C- Medicare Advantage. Alternative to parts A and B
D- Medication coverage
