A

Complex skeleton disease characterised with low bone density and micro architectural defects-bone fragiglity

Aetiology and risk factors of Osteoporosis

A

Classically caused by loss of bone density and change in architecture due to ageing

Risk factors:
Post menopausal women (main people to have it)
White
Lower BMI
Hypogonadism, 
Smoking
alcohol
Low CA/Vit D

Epidiemology of Osteoporosis

A

Extremely common

17% of white women have it

Signs and Sx of Osteoporosis

A

Its all about risk factors-and scanning old people in general

Nothing as such
But can cause microfractures and pression fractures-

e.g.: Back pain, hip pain, leg/knee pain

Kyphosis is usually part of back fractures
Impaired Gait

Investigations of Osteoporosis

A

DEXA Scan-T score under 2.5 is the cutoff

FRAX score is useful for risks
