give a simple description of the sternum
the sternum is a flat bone which lies in the neck and it consist of the body, the xiphoid process, manubrium and the costal notches
describe the manubrium
the manubrium is the superior wider part of the sternum
describe the body of the sternum
the body has 4 segments with 3 ridges connecting them
describe the xiphoid process
this is the most inferior part of the sternum and it lays at level with the 9th thoracic rib
describe the structure of the ribs
there are 12 paris of ribs
the first 7 ribs are called true ribs which are directly attached to the sternum via CC
Ribs 8-10 are called false ribs meaning they are attached to the sternum indirectly via CC
Ribs 11 and 12 are floating ribs
each rib ends in costal cartilage
