Osteology of the distal femur, patella, tibia and fibula Flashcards
What are the proximal (medial and lateral) and distal (medial and lateral) borders of the linea aspera?
Proximal medial = Pectineal line
Proximal lateral = Gluteal tuberosity
Distal medial = Medial supracondylar line
Distal lateral = Lateral supracondylar line
Where does the medial supracondylar line end?
Adductor tubercle
Where does the lateral supracondylar line end?
Lateral femoral condyle
What are the medial and lateral condyles of the femur?
Articulating surfaces of the distal femur to form the knee joint with the tibia and patella
What prevents the patella from displacing laterally in the trochlear groove?
- More prominent lateral femoral condyle (than medial) = deeper trochlear groove
- Vastus medialis obliquus (VMO)
What are the medial and lateral epicondyles and which one is bigger?
Bony elevations above the non-articulating surfaces of each condyle
-Medial epicondyle is larger
What type of bone is the patella?
Seasmoid
What are the superior and inferior attachments of the patella?
Superior = Quadriceps tendon Inferior = Patellar ligament (patellar tendon)
What are the main functions of the patella?
- Acts as a fulcrum (enables quadriceps to directly cross anterior aspect of the knee)
- Protection
- Reduce frictional forces (between quadriceps and femoral condyles)
What is the tibial plateau?
Flat surface on proximal tibia formed by the medial and lateral condyles
-this articulates with the femoral condyles
What is the intercondylar eminence?
Main site of attachment for ACL and menisci of knee located at the centre of the intercondylar area (between the medial and lateral intercondylar tubercles)
What is the shape of the tibial shaft?
Prism
What are the 3 borders of the tibial shaft?
- Anterior (marked by tibial tuberosity)
- Posterior (marked by soleal line)
- Lateral border/interosseous border
What is the medial malleolus?
Bony projection in the distal medial aspect of the tibia
-articulates with tarsal bones to form ankle joint
What are the 3 articulations of the fibula?
- Proximal tibiofemoral joint
- Distal tibiofemoral joint
- Ankle joint
