Disorders of the knee Flashcards

1
Q

What are the common causes of femoral shaft fractures?

A
  • High-velocity trauma e.g. falls from a height, road traffic collision
  • High-energy sports (distal fractures)
  • Child abuse
  • Low velocity injury with predisposing factors e.g. osteoporotic bones

Q

What is the common cause for a collateral ligament injury?

A

Direct contact sports from acute varus or valgus angulation

  • Valgus = MCL affected
  • Varus = LCL affected

16
Q

What is the common cause for a PCL injury?

A

Dashboard injury - road traffic collision

17
Q

How are ACL and PCL injuries tested for?

A

Anterior and posterior drawer test = used for both

Lachman’s test = ACL only

18
Q

What is a knee dislocation?

A

Displacement of articulating bones in the knee joint

-must at least rupture 3 out 4 ligaments (ACL, PCL, LCL, MCL)

19
Q

What is a knee effusion?

A

Accumulation of fluid inside the knee joint

20
Q

What is bursitis of the knee?

A

Inflammation of a bursa in the knee joint (any of the 6)

21
Q

What is a Housemaid’s knee bursitis?

A

Inflammation of the pre-patellar bursa

22
Q

What is Clergyman’s knee bursitis?

A

Inflammation of the infrapatellar bursa (superficial is more common than deep)

23
Q

What is a Baker’s cyst?

A

Bursitis/Inflammation of the semimembranosus bursa

24
Q

What is Osgood-Schlatter’s disease?

A

Inflammation of the apophysis (site of insertion) of the patellar ligament into tibia

25
Q

What is septic arthritis?

A

Invasion of the joint space by micro-organisms usually bacteria
