3 main distinguishing features:
- Triangular vertebral foramen
- Bifid spinous process
- Transverse foramina

distinguishing features:
- Vertebral body is heart shaped
- Presence of demi facets that articulate with heads of ribs
- Presence of costal facets that articular with tubercles of ribs
- Spinous processes are long and slant inferiorally
