COMMON AFFECTATIONS
TRIAD OF SYMPTOMS (PJL)
PJL
• Pain
• Joint stiffness <30 mins
• Locomotir restriction/limitation of movements
OA Appearance (SDM)
SDM
• Swelling
• Deformity
• Muscle Wasting
GOALS OF OA MNGT (MOM)
MOM
• Minimize pain
• Optimize function
• Modify the process of jt damage
Effective as NSAIDs in controlling pain, but no anti-inflammatory effects
ACETAMINOPHEN
Used if one or a few joints affected, especially knee and/or hand OA
TOPICAL NSAIDS
For inadequate symptom relieft from topical NSAIds, symptomatic OA in multiple joints, and/or patients with hip OA
• Oral NSAIDs (lowest dose)
• COX-2 selective NSAID
• nonselective NSAID + proton pump inhibitor (px w comorbid)
Pharmacologic Therapy
• Oral and topical NSAIDs
• Topical capsaicin, duloxetine
• Intraarticular glucocorticoids
Key ingredients for production of several components of articular cartilage and synovial fluid
Glucosamine and Chrondoitin Sulfate
