What is oesteoarthritis?
Clinical syndrome of joint pain acompanied by varying degrees of functional limitation & reduced QOL
What is the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis?
- Rate of dmg exceeds rate of repair
- Joint fails to dissipate load
- Leads to cycle degredation.
- Exposed bone marrow -> mor dmg
- Further loss of cartilage & growth of osteophytes
- Narrowing of joint space
- Results in synovitis & effusion
What are the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis?
Acitivity related joint pain
Morning stiffness lasts no longer that 30mins
Muscle wasting
Hands/fingers have nodules present.
What the diagnosis of osteoarthritis clinically without investigations?
Activity relates joint pain AND
morning stiffness lasts no longer tha 30 mins AND
over 45 yrs old.
What lifestlye changes can you do to help manage osteoarthritis?
Weight loss
Exercise - core
Physical aids
What pharmacological treatments can you use for osteoarthritis?
Topical NDSAIDs / Topical Capsacin
Paracetamol
Oral NSAIDs + PPI
Opoids
Intra-articular CC
