Osteoarthritis Flashcards
OA:
progressive joint disease affecting hands, feet, hips, knees and spine; inflammation and breakdown of cartilage + bone
OA features:
loss of articular cartilage, bone cysts/bone thickening, osteophyte formation, synovitis
cartilage composition in OA:
fibrillation, fissures, delamination + bone exposure
early OA:
chondrocyte death, upregulation of inflammatory responses, degradation of cartilage + fibrillation, erosion, microfractures
later OA:
chondrocyte hypertrophy - calcified cartilage, cartilage degradation affects chondrocytes (increased inflammatory response), bone remodelling (thickness), formation of bone cysts and osteophytes, larger erosion of bone
factors of developing OA:
structural abnormalities, malalignment, injury, feels, genetics, aging cartilage factors
OA diagnosis:
persistent pain in 1 or more joints, older than 45, morning stiffness longer than 30 min
