OSPE 1 Flashcards
Midbrain Function
Most rostral structure of brainstem. Connects “hindbrain” (pons, medulla, and cerebellum) with “forebrain” (cortex) via cerebral peduncles. Has superior and interior colliculi.
Pons Function
Relay system between spinal cord, cerebellum & cerebrum. Transmit between structures via cerebellar peduncles. Passageway for spinal cord tracts.
Medulla Oblongata Function
Continuous with spinal cord. Anterior is motor. Posterior is sensory.
Passageway for motor/sensory neurons
Autonomic control
Breathing regulation
Cerebellum Function
The little brain. Coordination of voluntary movement. Compares planned movement with actual movement. Monitors & makes adjustments to correct motor plans.
Thalamus function
Collection of nuclei (sensory & motor). Gatekeeper for sensory and motor signals that need to get to cerebral cortex (all sensory except olfaction).
Hypothalamus function
Maintain homeostasis by controlling endocrine and autonomic function.
