Osmosis Flashcards
Define osmosis
The passage of water from a region where it has a higher water potential to a region where it has lower water potential through a selectively permeable membrane (allow water + other small molecules through but not larger ones)
How can osmosis be quantified (measured)?
Using water potential
In terms of water potential, how does water move?
Always moves from high to low water potential
What is the water potential of 100% pure water?
100% pure water: 0
All solutions have a water potential lower than or equivalent to 0 + you can not get higher than 0
What does the addition of solutes do to the water potential?
It reduces the water potential
What does hypotonic mean?
There is a higher water potential inside the cell than outside of the cell
Name another word used to describe a hypotonic cell
Turgid
What does isotonic mean?
There is equal amount of water inside and outside of cell
Name another word used to describe a hypertonic cell
Plasmolyzed
What does hypertonic mean?
Low water potential inside cell (it shrivels)
Give the word to describe no net movement of water in a cell
Isotonic
What is lysis?
When the cell bursts when water enters the cell (hypotonic)
What is crenation?
Cell shrivels (hypertonic)
