Define osmosis.

A

The movement of free water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from an area with a higher concentration of free water molecules to an area with a lower concentration of free water molecules.

What is the process of osmosis?

A
  • Polar or charges substances dissolve in water because they can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules
  • a hydration shell of water molecules forms around each molecule or ion of solute.
  • this reduces the movement of these water molecules.
