Osmosis Flashcards
1
Q
Define osmosis.
A
The movement of free water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from an area with a higher concentration of free water molecules to an area with a lower concentration of free water molecules.
2
Q
What is the process of osmosis?
A
- Polar or charges substances dissolve in water because they can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules
- a hydration shell of water molecules forms around each molecule or ion of solute.
- this reduces the movement of these water molecules.
3
Q
What are the molecules not acting with the solute known as?
A
Free water molecules.
4
Q
When does osmosis stop?
A
when the free water molecules reach equilibrium
5
Q
Why must a membrane be present for osmosis to occur?
A
It prevents large solutes and charged solutes from moving across.
