Q
What is a partially permeable membrane:
A
One with very small holes in it.
Only tiny molecules like water can pass through them.
1
Q
What is osmosis:
A
The movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration.
2
Q
Why do the water molecules pass both ways during osmosis:
A
This happens because water molecules move about randomly all the time.
As there is more water molecules on one side than on the other, there’s a steady net flow of water onto the region with fewer water molecules.
This means the stronger solution gets more dilute.
