Distribution Of Organisms Flashcards
What’s the distribution of an organism:
Where an organism is found
What is a habitat:
The place where an organism lives
To study the distribution of an organism:
Measure how common an organism is in two sample areas and compare them.
Pooters:
For collecting ground insects
What do pooters look like:
Jars that have a rubber bungs sealing the top, and two tubes stuck through the bung.
Pitfall traps:
Another way to investigate ground insects
What do pitfall traps look like:
Steep-sided containers that are sunk in a hole in the ground.
Sweep nets:
Used for collecting animals from long grass
What does a sweep net look like:
A net lined with strong cloth for collecting insects from long grass
Pond nets:
Used for collecting animals from ponds
How do you use a pond net:
First sample area - sweep net along bottom of the pond then turn net out into a white tray to count organisms.
Second sample area - do the same and compare
How do you use sweep nets:
First sample area - sweep net through grass and count the number of insects
Second sample area - do the same
How to use pitfall traps:
Leave trap overnight. Insects that come along fall into the container and can’t get out, so count them.
Use a Quadrat to:
Study the distribution of small organisms
What is a quadrat:
A square frame enclosing a known area to compare how common an organism is in two sample areas
