Osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis?
Diffusion of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from high water potential to low water after potential
What’s it called when two solutions have the same water potential
isotonic
what’s it called when the solution has higher water potential than the cell
hypotonic
what’s it called when a solution has lower water potential than the cell
hypertonic
factors effecting the rate of osmosis
•The water potential gradient- the higher the water potential gradient the faster the rate of osmosis
•Thickness of the exchange surface- the thinner the exchange surface the faster the rate of osmosis
•The surface area of the exchange surface the larger the surface area the faster the rate of osmosis
