Q

Lysis

A

The effect of water moving into an animal cell causing the vacuole inside to expand and the membrane to stretch until it splits and the cell bursts

Q

How does a plant gain support

A

When water enters a cell the vacuole increases in size pushing the cell membrane against the cell wall. The force of the membrane pushing against the stiff cell wall increases the pressure inside the cell making it firm or turgid

Q

Plasmolysis

A

When a plant cell loses too much water by osmosis. So much water leaves the plant that the cell’s content shrinks pulling the cell membrane away from the cell wall

Q

Measuring water uptake using a potometer

A

A bubble potometer is used to measure water uptake in a leafy shoot. As water evaporates from the leaves of the cut shoot, the shoot sucks up water through the potometer. The distance an air bubble moves in a period of time can be used to calculate the rate of water uptake
