Osmosis Flashcards
Define osmosis
the passage of water from a region where it has a higher water potential to a region where it has a lower water potential through a selectively permeable membrane
What does selectively permeable mean?
membrane is permeable to water molecules but not larger molecules
Define solute, solvent and solution
“solute - substance dissolved in a solvent
solvent - something a solute dissolves in
solution - solute and solvent together”
What letter is water potential represented by?
What are the units of water potential?
kPa (unit of pressure)
What is water potential?
the pressure created by water molecules
What is the water potential of pure water at standard temperature and pressure?
0kPa
What happens to water potential when you add a solute to pure water?
it decreases
What happens to the water potential as you add more solute?
it becomes more negative (lower)
How can we find the water potential of cells or tissues?
place then in solutions of varying water potentials, when there is no net gain or loss of water the water potential in the cell must be equal to that in the external solution
What causes water and solute molecules to be in random motion?
kinetic energy
What is dynamic equilibrium?
water potential on either side of the plasma membrane are equal - there is no net movement of water
Which of the following water potentials is the lowest? -23kPa, -56kPa, -45kPa
-56kPa
Explain why a red blood cell placed in pure water will absorb water by osmosis
the water potential inside the cell is lower than the water potential outside the cell
What name is given to a red cell bursting?
haemolysis
