Cell Membrane Structure Flashcards
What is a phospholipid?
Molecule with a phosphate head and fatty acid tail
What does hydrophobic mean?
water hating
What does hydrophilic mean?
water loving
Which part of a phospholipid is hydrophobic?
fatty acid tails
What part of a phospholipid is hydrophilic?
phosphate head
How do phospholipids arrange themselves in membranes?
as a bilayer
What is a glycoprotein?
protein in the membrane with a carbohydrate chain attached
What is a glycolipid?
phospholipid with a carbohydrate chain attached
What is the function of glycolipids and glycoproteins?
cell recognition (antigens, receptors etc)
What is the function of cholesterol in the membrane?
Stability - restricts movement of other molecules
What are the two types of proteins that span the membrane?
carrier proteins and channel proteins
What do channel proteins allow through the membrane?
ions
What do carrier proteins allow through the membrane?
large molecules (eg glucose)
Fluid mosaic model - why is it called fluid?
molecules can move about within the phospholipid bilayer
Fluid mosaic model - why is it called mosaic?
membrane made from different molecules eg phospholipids, protein
